Gareth Russell’s Ship of Dreams follows six first-class passengers on Titanic’s ill-fated April 1912 voyage: Countess of Rothes Lucy Leslie; shipbuilder Thomas Andrews; American industrialist John Thayer and his son Jack; Jewish-American immigrant Ida Straus; and film star Dorothy Gibson. Using previously unpublished sources, deck plans, and journal entries, Russell weaves their stories into a sweeping portrait of an era on the brink, examining the British class system, the birth of the film industry, the Irish Home Rule crisis, and the explosion of transatlantic shipping, all against the backdrop of one of the most famous disasters in history.

There is absolutely no doubt that this is an absorbing, richly researched account of Titanic – it has been recommended to me by multiple people I trust and respect, including – but it is not without its stumbling blocks.

I have to say I found the opening chapters a genuine challenge. Russell’s writing style takes some getting used to, and the level of detail in the early sections feels excessive at times. There’s a persistent tendency to favour an almost specialised-level of vocabulary, which can make the reading experience feel unnecessarily laboured. It’s a shame, because it creates a barrier that needn’t really be there.

Perhaps with a title that was originally The Darksome Bounds of a Failing World: The Sinking of the Titanic and The End of the Edwardian Era before being adapted to The Ship of Dreams: The Sinking of the Titanic and the End of the Edwardian Era, the impenetrable writing style shouldn’t have come as a surprise.

Still, as I persevered past those initial hurdles – and I have to concede I was listening to the audiobook – the book finds its stride considerably. Russell’s central premise to focus on six first-class passengers to illuminate the wider era works well, and his social observations are sharp.

The wider history he presents is packed with interesting detail and his skill at examining primary and secondary sources allows him to fill the book with the kind of small, immediate details that make for consistently involving reading (or listening!) and the characters he chooses are vivid, diverse and well-drawn.

The great strength of Ship of Dreams is how it positions Titanic within the broader sweep of the Edwardian era. Russell uses the sinking as a prism through which to examine the seismic shift modernity brought to the western world, exploring how the class system was falling apart, the Industrial Revolution was creating new kinds of wealth, and revolutionary fervour would lead to the Great War.

The decision to anchor, although not exclusively, the narrative in first-class does mean that steerage passengers, despite featuring in the broader analysis, never quite get a full look-in. Their absence takes away from a full social picture, which remains incomplete.

Combined with the dense, ornate writing style of the early chapters, this is a book that, despite its considerable merits, doesn’t entirely invite everyone. Those willing to push through, though, will be handsomely rewarded.

Forty years on from Dr. Robert Ballard’s discovery of the wreck, this documentary arrives with something genuinely new to say, and mostly says it well.

Rather than retreading the familiar tragedy, it is refreshingly quick to move on from the tragedy itself. Instead, it chooses to broaden the lens considerably, pulling in a respectable cast of historians, oceanographers, and members of the search itself to build a richer, more layered picture of both the ship and the quest to find it.

The well-worn facts about the night of 14th April 1912 are dispensed with efficiently, making room for more rewarding territory: the cultural context that made Titanic the world’s first truly global news story, and the growing Edwardian nostalgia that the ship became the ultimate epitome of.

Historians Tim Maltin and Gareth Russell are particularly engaging here, and the documentary’s explanation of Titanic’s location errors and the wrong coordinates that plagued early searches is illuminating for many people who don’t know this.

The Cold War classified backstory – that Ballard pitched a search for Titanic as cover for a US Navy mission to locate the sunken nuclear submarines USS Thresher and Scorpion – is what the average viewer will find revelatory, and the film handles it with appropriate weight.

It was classified for twenty years, and several contributors, including Bernard Pillaud of IFREMER and Scott Christeon, appear to be speaking on record about their involvement for the first time. This alone justifies the documentary’s existence.

For Titanic fans, it is the deeper exploration of Jack Grimm’s earlier expeditions that is more interesting. The fuller look at the earlier attempt to find the wreck is a lesser-known chapter in the ship’s long afterlife, one that the documentary handles with the enthusiasm it deserves.

It reveals that Grimm’s team had actually located the wreck four years before Robert Ballard, but dismissed it because, at only 600 feet, it seemed too small and too far east, on the assumption that the ship had sunk intact and closer to the incorrect coordinates sent out by the operators when she was sinking.

That detail, one of fourteen targets they spent months surveying, reframes the search in a quietly devastating way. When the truth is revealed, the documentary earns its sinking-gut feeling entirely. The excitement around the discovery of what they claim is a propeller, too, carries genuine human warmth, regardless of whether history later disproves the find.

Where it stumbles is in the details. Some B-roll footage feels mismatched – crowds apparently jumping into lifeboats in broad daylight sit awkwardly against the midnight tragedy being described – and there are moments where the production strains against its budget.

The Murdoch shooting claim once again rears its head without quite enough scrutiny, and, for all its broadening of perspective, the film sidesteps any debate whatsoever about the ethics of salvaging the wreck. Given how contentious that question has become, the omission feels like a missed opportunity.

That said, by pulling the story away from Ballard’s sole perspective and giving proper credit to the wider team, including the largely unsung IFREMER contributors, the documentary adds something genuinely useful to the Titanic world.

It captures the excitement of deep-sea discovery while situating Titanic in her proper cultural moment, from the Edwardian twilight it represented to the wave of nostalgia that culminated in the best-selling book and smash hit film A Night to Remember, which kept her memory alive long enough for anyone to bother looking.

Halfway through 1953’s Titanic, Barbara Stanwyck’s character Julia drops a bombshell on her tuxedoed husband Richard: their preteen son isn’t biologically his. She’d strayed from the marriage one night on a beach after his elite friends mocked her working-class background.

The ship hasn’t even hit the iceberg yet, but we’ve already spent most of the runtime watching an upper-middle-class domestic drama play out against the backdrop of maritime disaster.

This is Titanic as a vehicle for interpersonal dysfunction, where the world’s most famous shipwreck becomes merely the setting through which a fractured family resolves its tensions. And as a fictionalisation of a sinking that happened just forty years prior at that point in time, this film inadvertently reveals everything about class and gender in both 1912 and 1953, though at times it is a class commentary nobody asked for.

From the opening scenes, class warfare drives every interaction. Richard, played by stoic Hollywood veteran Clifton Webb, has pushed his way aboard by buying a ticket from an immigrant father, tempting him with enough cash to buy coveted California land. He suggests the man “tribal huddle” with his wife to decide – language that makes the film’s perspective painfully clear.

His contempt for his wife’s origins drips from every line as well: “I made the mistake of thinking I could civilise a girl who bought her hat out of a Sears Roebuck catalogue.” He calls the Midwest “the wilderness.” When Julia kidnaps their children to return them to America, away from the European leisure class she’s grown to loathe, Richard sees it as dragging their daughter into squalor.

The irony? Webb himself came from middle America – his father was a ticket clerk from an Indiana farming family. His own mother made an aspirational class leap when she moved her “little Webb” to New York at age eleven to pursue theatre. The film’s tension between American simplicity and European opulence wasn’t just character drama; it was personal mythology.

Make no mistake: this is mostly a 1950s melodrama that happens to be set on Titanic. Director Jean Negulesco, known for films like How to Marry a Millionaire, treats the disaster as backdrop rather than subject. The ship’s doomed voyage becomes the crucible for family reconciliation and a return to “American values” after a corrupting sojourn into European decadence.

The screenplay won an Academy Award for Best Story and Screenplay (its own category then), shared by Charles Brackett, Richard Breen, and Walter Reisch. The story goes that producer Darryl F. Zanuck called them in and said he had Clifton Webb under contract and access to CinemaScope technology– he wanted something big. The Titanic idea emerged with Webb cast essentially as John Jacob Astor or Benjamin Guggenheim, one of the twenty-five millionaires who died, fictionalised into a whiskey-toting cliche.

Historical accuracy clearly wasn’t the priority. The film opens with Richard buying that third-class ticket because the ship is “sold out” – except Titanic wasn’t sold out at all. Bruce Ismay is conspicuously absent from the film entirely. There’s a bar on the ship (there wasn’t one). The captain announces they’ll hit icebergs around 8 a.m. (simply what?). At one stage, they considered calling the film Nearer My God to Thee, but let’s not touch the Titanic’s last song debate with a ten-foot pole here today.

Gender politics are an open wound here too. The 1950s woman had been somewhat liberated by technology, by war work, by independence. This film seems determined to send her right back to Edwardian gender norms. Julia’s entire arc involves rebelling against elite snobbery, kidnapping her children for a simpler American life, only to be reduced to tears and apparent madness in a lifeboat, watching the ship sink. Her feminism – such as it was – evaporates.

This is notably the opposite of what James Cameron does with Rose in 1997, and the contrast is striking. Where Cameron’s film uses the disaster to liberate his heroine, the 1953 version uses it to put women back in their place. Julia needs Richard to save her and the children. The sinking restores order. She instantly forgets all the reasons she fled from him in the night.

Meanwhile, Thelma Ritter plays Maud Young, an obvious Margaret Brown stand-in, who spends most of the film in the smoking room playing cards with men– something that would never have been allowed on Titanic. When mistaken for someone of lesser class, she proclaims: “I have so many maids, some of the maids are now taking care of the maids.” She’s comic relief in a film that doesn’t quite know what to do with strong women.

The mythmaking around Titanic and gender began immediately in 1912, when anti-feminists employed the imagery of the ship as a “mechanical bride gone rogue.” The suffrage movement was gaining steam, making traditionalists nervous. The film taps into this anxiety forty years later, using male heroism during the disaster to argue for natural gender hierarchy.

For all its melodramatic excess and historical liberties, the 1953 Titanic does have effective moments. The opening image of an iceberg emerging from the ocean, creaking ominously, conveys genuine dread. The first-class dining saloon, shot in CinemaScope, captures a sense of opulence even if it’s not accurate. The tender scenes at Cherbourg work cinematically, all misty shadows and foreboding.

The final loading of the lifeboats is genuinely moving, with no musical score – just the screeching release of steam and chaos of running bodies. Once the men accept their fate (and the film portrays it as only men left on board, which is perhaps the most egregious error), they gather to smoke and sing “Nearer My God to Thee” as a group. It’s as if the ship pauses, sinking long enough for Richard to accept Norman as his son again, for the men to process their own heroism.

After the immigrant family boards a lifeboat, third-class essentially vanishes from the vessel. The film tries to affirm a classlessness of the middle class – everyone’s fine, heading toward their American dream.

But anyone who tries to tell Titanic stories without addressing class and race is kidding themselves. The White Star Line called Titanic “a great Anglo-Saxon triumph” representing “the preeminence of the Anglo-Saxon race on the ocean.” Officer Lowe notoriously claimed at the Senate inquiry that he fired his weapon because Italian emigrants were “rowdy,” insinuating their race explained their behaviour. Winston Churchill wrote that the disaster showed civilisation was “humane, Christian, and absolutely democratic” – laughably innocent rhetoric that drowned out more realistic voices pointing to greed and inhumanity.

The 1953 film, precisely because it’s so medium and formulaic, reveals how these politics existed plainly within movies of the era. It’s a perfect case study in how melodrama carries ideology, how domestic drama smuggles in larger cultural anxieties about class mobility, gender roles, and national identity.

In 1974, a bizarre Yale School of Drama play parodied this film with increasingly absurd revelations and ending with the son shooting his parents. The strangeness illustrates how much changed in just twenty years – civil rights progress, second-wave feminism, transformed cultural consumption. Richard Sturgis would faint to see such a world. J.J. Astor probably would have too.

That’s the curse and gift of the historian: we create narrative later, moulding and explaining and bending stories in new ways. That’s what this film does with Titanic. That’s what we’re all doing when we revisit it now. And somehow, that makes this insanely mediocre melodrama (mostly) worth the hour and a half.

If you’re even vaguely into Titanic or White Star Line history, The Grand Tour at the recently rebranded White Star Line Hotel is a really fun hour.

The absolute highlight is the tour guide. He’s the star of the show: knowledgeable, passionate, and exactly the kind of person you want leading something like this. He packs in a tonne of detail, points out features you’d otherwise miss, and brings it to life with historic photos and context that stop it feeling like a standard walk-around.

There are a few standout features in what is fundamentally a modern hotel. From the Grand Hall to the Quarter Deck, you’ll hear hidden stories and surviving details from the former White Star Line headquarters (and Titanic’s port of registry) – including the original boiler and the old safe, which add a satisfying layer of “this is the real thing” amid an otherwise frankly garish refurbishment.

The best of them is the original rain tank bath in one of the bedrooms – a genuinely brilliant, quirky slice of heritage that makes it feel like far more than a themed backdrop.

You do cover a fair bit of ground, but it’s still, fundamentally, a tour of a hotel: walking up and down floors, peeking into spaces, and hearing the stories attached to them. Go in with the right expectations, be ready to use your imagination, and you’ll have a great time. If you’re a proper Titaniac, it’s great value.

Thankfully for me (and probably you), we will likely never reach saturation point on Titanic. With that comes the BBC’s latest attempt at retelling the infamous disaster.

Titanic Sinks Tonight is a four-night run that makes the whole catastrophe feel immediate again – not as a familiar museum-piece, but as something happening to you, minute by minute, in real time, dropping you onto the decks with people who had no idea what was coming.

Actors deliver survivors’ words direct to camera in this docudrama hybrid, drawn from meticulously researched letters, diaries and recollections, while an on-screen clock and crisp diagrams keep the mechanics of the sinking brutally legible. It could have felt gimmicky, but with the BBC’s attention to detail, it works.

The direct address has the same jolt as colourised archive footage – suddenly these aren’t stock characters in a story you already know, but individuals trying to make sense of a night that slips from “odd bump” to “we’re all going to die”.

Where the series is strongest is in its grasp of who knew what, and when. Class doesn’t just shape comfort; it shapes information – and therefore survival. First-class passengers are more likely to challenge, question, and get answers from senior crew, while others take their cues from those above them, trusting the ship’s promise of order.

Hovering over it all is the chaos of communication: fragmented messages from the wireless room, muddled chains of command, and passengers being reassured simply because the people in charge don’t yet understand the scale of the damage – a fatal lag between what’s happening below decks and what anyone feels able to say out loud above them.

The series also quietly sidesteps the usual Titanic greatest-hits reel (there’s not one mention of the ‘Unsinkable Molly Brown’ or the richest man on the ship, John Jacob Astor).

By bringing lesser-told lives into view, it restores Titanic’s scale and the sense that this was a floating cross-section of the early 20th century, not a handful of familiar characters we’ve been trained to watch for.

It helps that the acting is genuinely gripping throughout, chief amongst them Tyger Drew-Honey and Vicky Allen, respectively riveting as wireless operator Harold Bride and first-class stewardess Violet Jessop.

A lot of the drama stems from the show trusting performance over spectacle. Rather than constantly cutting to rushing water, it will linger on an actor’s expression as the horror of understanding what it means to count only five rows of lights above water sinks in.

In some of the most powerful scenes, all that’s used is a face that looks like it’s doing sums in its head and not liking the answer.

The writing and structure are unusually digestible for something this dense. You get clear, memorable nuggets of information, like the rate water is coming in, without the show turning into a lecture. And, for once, it’s nice to hear period-authentic dialogue, rather than familiar Hollywood melodrama.

Instead of a panto villain beat, the infamous “shut up” exchange with SS Californian plays out like what it almost certainly was: a weary, irritated snap from an overworked wireless operator who’s juggling passenger traffic and routine messages, with no way of knowing that this seemingly minor brushoff will look monstrous in hindsight.

That restraint matters. The programme lets you feel the tragedy of it – the banality of a human reaction becoming part of a chain of disaster – without overstating the certainty, or pretending it was a deliberate act of negligence.

Elsewhere, it doesn’t duck uncomfortable truths, sitting with messier controversies from guns, gates and suicide to class divisions and lifeboats pulling away.

Fourth Officer Joseph Boxhall’s strand exposes the cold calculation behind ignoring Captain Smith’s order to turn back for more passengers, with the raw reality of the water all around him.

Even if you know the history, the series finds fresh heartache in the delays, miscommunications, and slow realisation that politeness and protocol are not emergency procedures.

All of this is accompanied by eerie, lingering shots of the ship quietly turning against itself. Water creeps up corridors with the confidence of a killer in a horror film, actors’ eyes fill with glassy dread, and the ship groans like a dying monster.

It also makes space for Carpathia beyond a footnote. So many Titanic retellings sprint to the plunge and call it a night, but here, the rescue ship’s lights feel like a genuine turning point, a small, human relief threaded into the horror.

The panel of experts sharpen the social dynamics and psychological truths inside messy testimony, most of which is heard here on screen for the first time ever.

Many added genuinely fresh angles, not rehashed Titanic trivia. The perspective, for example, of how a third-class upbringing of hardship and social position shaped their instincts in a disaster, was striking. Others were damning about how leadership, communication, and confidence curdled into catastrophe.

At times, the commentary leaned into hindsight in a way that feels unfair, as if people in 1912 ought to have followed rules that only exist because Titanic forced the world to invent them.

Visually, the physical staging is impressive – arguably the best since Cameron’s 1997 juggernaut – and you can see genuine care in the set pieces and details.

The recreations are persuasive, often in the small, tactile details: authentic-looking cabins, blankets, uniforms, the clutter of lived-in spaces. When it goes below decks, it’s even better. The boiler-rooms feel hot, loud, claustrophobic, and the wireless room is authentic, complemented by a quiet building panic from the leads.

It looks and sounds terrific. The cinematography focuses on cold, inky night shots, tight faces under harsh deck light, providing a real sense of scale without losing intimacy. Add the creaks, wind, distant shouts and constant low dread in the mix, and it punches way above its weight.

But this isn’t James Cameron with a full-scale replica ship and a $200m budget; it’s the BBC on a fraction of that. Some digital sequences look murky, and the use of AI-enhanced imagery (where it appears) leaves a slightly sour taste in a series that’s otherwise trying to honour real voices. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it can be distracting, and full credit to them for owning up to its use.

Some of the CGI – especially the digital breath – grated on me, and there are moments when the backgrounds feel a touch underpopulated, especially when witnesses are describing a “sea of people”.

Still, even with those caveats, Titanic Sinks Tonight is an intense watch. It’s not the final word (I’m not sure anything ever will be), and it’s not always as grounded as it wants to be – but it restores something essential that Titanic media too often loses: This was not a myth, not a film, not a brand, not a slogan on a cap. This was a night of ordinary people making impossible decisions as their world slowly and horrifically slid into a dark, icy hell.

This isn’t just the BBC at its best; this is immersive, captivating, brilliant, jolting, punishing, chilling and upsetting television. As a result, they have finally done what so many have tried – and failed – to do since 1997: Successfully and effectively put Titanic back on screen with the care and attention that both she and those who sailed on her deserve.

This is unmissable Titanic.

If it’s your first time in Liverpool and you want to roll out of bed straight into the Albert Dock or the main museums, this isn’t quite it. The hotel sits around two miles from the city’s headline attractions – you’re looking at about a 25-minute walk or an eight-minute taxi ride to most things.

But if you’re even vaguely interested in the city’s maritime and industrial past, Stanley Dock is fascinating in its own right. The waterfront outside is raw and atmospheric, and facing some rooms is the hulking, abandoned Tobacco Warehouse – once the largest brick building in the world. It’s not pretty in a conventional way, but it is unforgettable.

And this is where Titanic Hotel Liverpool really earns its name – not so much in historical detail as in sheer sense of occasion. Corridors stretch on forever, ceilings soar to almost dizzying heights, and the public spaces have a theatrical, titanic-like scale.

Exposed brick, vaulted ceilings and a cool palette of greys, blues and dark wood give it the feel of a very on-trend loft that’s been supersized.

Even though Titanic herself never visited Liverpool, the broader maritime connection feels right – the building and the dock do most of the heavy lifting in terms of atmosphere.

If you’re a hardcore Titanic nerd expecting artefacts, local connections, detailed exhibits or a deep dive into the ship’s story like Titanic Hotel Belfast, you will be disappointed.

Beyond the name, a few visual nods, some books in the bar and a general ocean-liner mood, there isn’t a huge amount of specific Titanic content on show.

It’s more “evocative maritime warehouse with Titanic branding” than “immersive overnight Titanic experience”. The vibes are stunning though – moody lighting, a sense of history in the brickwork.

That said, if what you want is to feel like you’re in a grand old dockside building with a brush of liner glamour, it delivers. Just manage expectations: this is a stylish hotel first, Titanic homage second – even the ‘staircase’ barely resembles the famous liner’s.

The rooms are where the hotel really shines. Even the entry-level ones are enormous by UK city standards (starting around 56 sqm), with a loft-apartment feel: exposed brick, original beams, big sofas and plenty of floor space you don’t quite know what to do with. (I jogged laps, litearlly, around mine)

The design is clean and modern without tipping into generic business-hotel territory. Bathrooms are equally generous, with stacks of fluffy towels and fixtures that match the overall “industrial luxe” feel. If you can, request a room facing the Tobacco Warehouse; it’s a brooding, oddly beautiful backdrop.

The window seats are a dream for readers.

Stanley’s Bar & Grill is the main restaurant: a huge, buzzy space serving steak, seafood, comfort-food classics and excellent vegetarian and vegan options. The food is generally good rather than destination-level, but it does the job.

Breakfast was excellent – plentiful spreads of everything you could hope for from cereal to omelettes and pancakes to fruit and yoghurt. The Rum Bar, nodding to the building’s days as a spirits warehouse, is a nice touch – especially if you like a rum-based cocktail and something simpler, more pub-style to eat.

The staff are one of Titanic Hotel’s big plus points. They’re relaxed, chatty and genuinely friendly, which goes a long way in such an imposing building.

In terms of facilities, the offer doesn’t quite match the sheer amount of space on hand. The He Maya Blue spa – a moody, inviting area with a hydrotherapy pool, sauna, steam room and relaxation space – needs to be booked (it’s extremely busy) and is an extra cost.

Titanic Hotel Liverpool is a bold, atmospheric base that leans into industrial-maritime drama and delivers huge, stylish rooms at fair prices. If you’re expecting a full-blown Titanic museum-hotel hybrid, like Belfast’s, it’s more superficial than that – the ship herself is more present in the branding than in any deep storytelling.

But if you’re after a memorable, cinematic place to stay in Liverpool, this won’t let you down.

The trouble is the execution. Character models are clunky, movement is jerky, and the overall look feels eerily reminiscent of the 1996 computer game Titanic: Adventure Out of Time rather than contemporary, immersive virtual reality.

You’re guided by a “deep-sea explorer”, starting at the wreck, before being inexplicably scaled up so the ship looks toy-like beneath your feet – an odd choice when VR should be the perfect medium to convey Titanic’s vastness, especially as she lies in two pieces on the ocean floor with a debris field spanning more than 15 square miles.

Then it’s back in time to Southampton, where cloned crowds make awkward, copy-and-paste waves and jerky loops – more The Sims than virtual reality. Then it’s off to your cabin, the bridge, boiler rooms, restaurant and a walk-down of the Grand Staircase, which didn’t work for me – I ended up falling through a virtual gap.

The pivotal iceberg moment – the one chance to conjure dread and scale – is curiously underplayed. You feel neither the mass of the berg nor the gravity of the moment.

Interactivity sounds promising, yet it rarely matters. Some items can be picked up, but most are token curios rather than meaningful touchpoints. (Exhibition Hub’s attempt succeeded more in this area.)

You’re encouraged by a virtual chaperone to explore, but there isn’t much to find, and the quality simply isn’t high enough to savour close-up views of the wreck or interiors.

There’s a real chance to connect with the weight of the story – even just orbiting the torn-apart hull – but step too close and the image muddies into grainy, out-of-focus textures, and the moment slips away.

Immersion takes further knocks. You can see other visitors as glowing silhouettes even during the deep-sea descent, which shatters the illusion when it should be pitch-black and solitary. Audio is underpowered, so the guide is easily drowned out by nearby chatter or the ship’s sound effects.

With no filler content – no artefacts, displays or context panels – the visit lives or dies on the VR; so when that falls short, so does the whole experience. Packaged as a tidy, educational walk-through, it will land fine for first-timers and families who want an accessible overview or a fun way to kill 40 minutes on a Sunday afternoon.

But this is the fifth Titanic VR I’ve reviewed and, as with the other four, it is built by people more interested in the tech than the ship. Titanic is the hook, not the subject.

If you want a transporting, richly detailed encounter that builds awe and tension where it counts, this isn’t it – and for Titaniacs, it will disappoint in both detail and authenticity.

I’m still waiting for someone to really seize the VR opportunity with sharper models, purposeful interactions, bolder direction and an emotional narrative – it’s not as though Titanic doesn’t provide plenty of it!

Until then, this is a tidy schools-and-tourists intro to the world’s most famous ship with a few neat touches, but it falls well short of full immersion, new insight or emotional heft.

Stripped of spectacle – it’s already been in four cities, with several more to come – it’s a more restrained telling than some, and in places, that makes it all the more effective.

The focus on conservation is welcome. A whole section is devoted to the preservation of maritime artefacts – a commendable inclusion, if faintly ironic given how little from Titanic herself is actually here.

The “expert pass” is worth the extra cost: former Titanic diver Dik Barton speaks with authority, offering measured insights you won’t get from the display boards or any other exhibition. Though some Titaniacs may find his blunt dismissal of the ship – “I’m a deep-sea explorer, not a Titanc obsessive” – hard to swallow.

Some exhibits genuinely resonate. A fragment of stained life-jacket twill carries a quiet power, while a first-edition salesman’s copy of The Story of the Wreck of the Titanic – complete with the original pitch urging agents to “work like a cyclone” while “the great Disaster [is] on everyone’s lips” – is an evocative reminder of how quickly the tragedy was commercialised.

One of Wallace Hartley’s music sheets, made more poignant by his roots not far from Manchester, a remarkably intact fragment from the Grand Staircase, and steward Thomas Mullin’s personal notebook offer memorable moments, whilst the chance to sit on a second-class chair from Olympic will be sure to keep the kids engaged.

Other items include genuinely insightful Harland and Wolff documents and original photograph negatives, including the famous photo of passengers being rescued by Carpathia.

But, as with so many other exhibitions, questions of authenticity undermine the experience.

In the entrance lobby is a replica of Kate Winslet’s “flying” costume, which organisers insist is screen-worn. Secured only by a rope, it’s hard to believe given Winslet’s screen-worn ‘sinking coat' sold for over £300,000 at auction. Regardless, a side-by-side comparison (h/t Dale McCarthy) expose its inauthenticty.

Genuine props from James Cameron’s 1997 film – like a lifejacket and Thomas Andrews’ (Victor Garber) notebook – are kept behind glass, further casting doubt on the costume’s authenticity.

Elsewhere, a deckchair and blanket are presented as relics but cannot be definitively traced. “Rust from Titanic” is displayed without credible verification, making it indistinguishable from scrap metal.

While some items’ supposed historical value is emphasised, others are obvious reproductions or props, poorly labelled or ambiguously captioned, leaving visitors unsure of what’s genuine.

It’s not the first time I’ve seen – and taken issue with – dressed-up crew, but here it feels even more tonally misplaced than usual, adding an awkward note to an otherwise solemn subject.

As for their claim of “The UK’s Biggest Titanic Exhibition,” one wonders if they’ve ever been to Titanic Belfast. The UK’s largest touring Titanic exhibition, perhaps, but again, the persistent stretching of truth is frustrating.

That said, given it is a touring exhibtion, the scale is particularly impressive. It is easy, even for a casual attendee, to spend 90 minutes here, but it is the presentation that truly stuns.

Each object – authentic and otherwise – sits against large, colourised images of Titanic and Olympic, many brought to life for the first time ever. The effect can be genuinely moving, giving fresh immediacy to well-worn photographs.

There’s absolutely no doubt of the intention here. It is sincere and rooted in true passion for Titanic's story, and there are moments that do her justice. But without full transparency on provenance and a clearer separation between authentic history and imitation, it’s hard to stay fully engaged throughout.

It deserves some credit: it nails the haunting creak and crack of carbon fibre under pressure. Unfortunately, that’s one of the only moments that feels real in this otherwise overblown, undercooked attempt to dramatise a submersible disaster.

The characters are so thinly written they might as well be made of aluminium foil – predictable, unrelatable, and in many cases, deeply unlikeable, starting with the ‘influencer’.

The acting doesn’t help. Performances range from flat to outright grating, with little chemistry and barely a flicker of emotional depth. The character development is often baffling. The pilot’s son spends the 90-minute film paralysed by anxiety and unable to cope with confined spaces, which begs the question – why is he even there?

Dialogue veers into heavy-handed melodrama, especially when the film attempts to philosophise about mortality, legacy, and guilt – themes it neither explores in depth nor commits to. The result is muddled, insincere, and emotionally vacant.

Meanwhile, decisions defy logic throughout. Implausible even by Titan’s standards, the script is full of howlers.

On the surface, propellers on the sub are mounted backwards, whilst down in the sub, a character loses an ear by hitting the inside of a sub that supposedly can’t be opened from within. The pilot, at one point, snaps that “we’re not going to the stern” of Titanic whilst the window behind him quite literally shows the stern.

Another plotline involves banging on the side of the hull to attract attention from the surface “in a loud, precise rhythm,” but it’s immediately not precise, off-beat, and made more ridiculous by a line about resuming “now he’s awake,” suggesting he paused for his son’s nap.

The build-up to major decisions drags needlessly. You can see every twist coming long before it arrives, and the pacing stalls as characters spiral into overwrought debates and teary monologues.

One character decides to take a pill to die and “join [his] grandmother,” who was apparently on Titanic, only to regret the decision seconds later in a bizarre, emotionally hollow pivot that borders on parody.

Elsewhere, there’s an odd fixation on grisly detail – severed ears, hallucinations, vomit, dripping blood – and a prolonged dance scene, meant to symbolise carbon monoxide poisoning, just drags.

The father-son subplot is riddled with clichés of parental shortcomings that play out with the subtlety of a sledgehammer.

Attempts at satire or commentary – from meme-y voiceovers to vlog-style confessionals – feel muddled and misplaced.

The film can’t seem to decide if it wants to mock the media frenzy around Titan or offer a sombre tribute. Final messages are recorded on phones as if they’ll somehow survive implosion, and in what should be a high-stakes moment – the sub running out of air – the script still finds time for a sudden shouting match.

The first and final scenes are the only ones that land with any emotional weight, but by then it’s far too late. I was disengaged and disinterested in the fate of any of them.

Cinematographically, Locker punches well above its weight. It looks and sounds great – particularly the brittle cracking of the sub’s shell and the opening shot of the sub. But beneath that, it’s directionless, derivative, and dramatically dead in the water.

I hate giving a bad review to an independent film – we need more of them, not fewer – but there’s no escaping this one. Locker flounders where other indie greats like Open Water and The Blair Witch Project soared. Made on similar budgets, those films built atmosphere, dread, and emotional punch. This one just sinks.

Having been launched in Spain last year, the exhibition arrives in London for a six-month stay, offering an entertaining experience for those unfamiliar with the tragedy.

The experience begins with a walk down a gangplank and into a ship’s corridor offering some basic background information, before moving onto the main bulk of the exhibition.

As before, all artefacts come from Titanic’s sister ships or contemporaneous vessels – though there are many more of them this time around. This exhibition has never claimed to be about salvaged material (and there’s a whole debate around that anyway). What matters more is the emotional and narrative impact.

And to their credit, some of the objects on display are unique and genuinely impressive: a coat of arms linked to the Countess of Rothes and the Duff-Gordon family, personal letters, and newspaper clippings featuring Ismay’s father all offer intriguing glimpses into the world Titanic left behind.

Although the filler content has caught up this time, where the exhibition begins to excel is when it centres around experience, not artefacts.

The second VR walkthrough – previously a stumbling block – is vastly improved. Still a little clunky in places, but smoother, more atmospheric, and finally showing signs of its true potential, even if it doesn’t fully get there.

What hasn’t changed – and rightly so – is the exhibition’s spine-tingling centrepiece: the main immersive room. It remains the star of the show – a sweeping audiovisual spectacle that hurtles through Titanic’s construction, departure, and disaster with breathtaking pace and power.

It’s a 20-or-so-minute sequence, but it punches hard and will leave even Titaniacs in awe. (I watched the entire thing three times on my first visit in Madrid).

The first VR experience, however, remains the weak link. Awkward, visually poor, and frankly unnecessary. It doesn't add much to the overall journey, other than a noble attempt to honour the ship’s band. It feels like a leftover from an earlier version of the exhibition, struggling to hold attention or find its place within the exhibition.

The score continues to impress on second hearing. An original composition that avoids cliché and over-sentimentality, letting emotion swell naturally through well-timed orchestration. It’s a rare investment in exhibition sound design, and absolutely pays off.

Objects and touchpoints between immersive segments now feel more curated, with clearer purpose and context. The space itself is much improved, too, giving the whole experience room to breathe. It’s not a condensed walk-through – even casual visitors can now spend 90 minutes or more here.

Family audiences are now catered to, albeit with questionable interactive ‘game’ stations. Children can play touchscreen games or draw pictures that are then digitally integrated into the Titanic narrative. There’s also a free companion app that adds another layer of engagement for younger visitors.

Consistency and historical accuracy still waver in places – beginning before you’ve even stepped inside. The promotional material depicts a ship that wants so hard to be Titanic (but isn’t), hitting an iceberg on her port (she struck starboard), in choppy seas (it was famously a dead calm), at sunset (try pitch-black, moonless night).

Elsewhere, currency, for example, flicks between dollars, euros, and sterling throughout – likely a hangover from its original Spanish-language production.

One “Did You Know…” fact still reads: “The United States of America has banned the marketing of objects from the Titanic.”

When I first saw this in Madrid, I assumed it was just a slightly wonky translation. But now I’ve seen it again in the UK version, I’m genuinely baffled. What are they trying to say? The US has not banned the marketing of Titanic objects – in fact, American courts have repeatedly sided with RMS Titanic Inc., the salvor-in-possession, granting them permission to recover and even auction artefacts despite legal and ethical opposition. If anyone has any ideas, let me know!

The local connections in this London run aren’t as strong or embedded as the Spanish elements were in Madrid, and the mammoth efforts to locate the wreck two-and-a-half miles beneath the surface are barely touched on. There isn’t even a mention of Dr. Robert Ballard.

So yes, there are some pretty glaring omissions and of course, you will learn and experience more at Titanic Belfast or Southampton’s SeaCity museum, but as a catch-all introduction to Titanic's story, it's effective – broad, accessible, and emotionally engaging.

The Legend of Titanic may still fall short on the historical accuracy, details and physical scale, but as a touring immersive experience, it has probably risen to the top of the pile.

Hardcore Titaniacs will find many faults as I did. Still, meaningful updates, better flow, and a longer, richer run-time make this version its best yet.

Instead of rehashing well-worn accounts of first-class opulence and iceberg drama, this one-off Channel 4 documentary produced by Belfast Afro-Mic Productions turns the lens on the ship’s lesser-known passengers, most significantly the Syrian families who boarded with hopes of new lives in America.

The story of Sīlānah Yazbak and her descendants – uncovering hushed-up claims of violent treatment during the sinking – offers a rare, haunting insight into the racial trauma often erased from Titanic lore.

They’re not alone. The documentary also follows descendants including Deirdre McIntyre, Laura Ward, Helen Sanderson and Cliff Ismay – each tracing ties to passengers or crew from across the class divide.

Among them are the great-grandchildren of a steward who served in second class, and a Belfast-born family whose ancestor helped build the ship but never lived to see her sail. These interwoven narratives enrich the story, giving a more complex and democratic sense of who Titanic belonged to and who she left behind.

The pacing is tight – coming in at just 45 minutes – and compelling, weaving genealogical detective work with personal emotion.

The Belfast focus roots the story firmly in the city that built her. Sweeping, beautiful shots of Belfast, Harland & Wolff, and Titanic Quarter make for breathtaking settings – though perhaps I’m biased, having lived there and still counting it as my favourite city in the world.

All that said, it’s not without its flaws. Some of the documentary’s framing – especially around J. Bruce Ismay’s escape – leans a little too close to soap-opera "gotcha" territory. His inclusion feels more like a necessary narrative hook to get the green light, offering a familiar name to anchor the story, rather than a fully developed thread. As a result, the treatment feels tacked-on and somewhat shallow – a nod to scandal over substance.

And eagle-eyed viewers will rightly quibble with moments that drift from strict historical accuracy – including a particularly egregious misrepresentation of a photograph, which the filmmakers fail, several times, to clarify is not an original.

Too often, Titanic obsessives get caught up in the minutiae – deck plans, rivet counts, and officer rosters – at the expense of bigger, human stories. This documentary is clearly pitched as a deeper, emotional ‘catch all’ for a mainstream audience. It may not satisfy the purists, but we should at least celebrate Channel 4 for trying something new: broadening the lens, amplifying underheard voices, and keeping Titanic's story alive.

With exclusive access to the world-leading visitor experience, Titanic Belfast, and contributions from historians Nick Barratt – author of Lost Voices from the Titanic: The Definitive Oral History – and Leila Salloum Elias – author of The Dream and Then the Nightmare: The Syrians who Boarded the Titanic – it would be unfair to say this isn’t a serious effort to uncover new and under-told stories.

Even where it embellishes, Our Secret Histories has a clear purpose: to challenge the status quo and shine a light on those too often left in the dark.

In doing so, it attempts something similar to Steven Schwankert’s The Six – spotlighting forgotten or overlooked Titanic passengers. With far less time and less success, it still remains a thoughtful and valuable addition to that same lineage of corrective storytelling – especially for those hungry for bite-sized but emotionally rich documentaries.

Netflix’s Titan: The Oceangate Disaster opens with eerie brilliance, echoing the unsettling rawness of The Blair Witch Project. It immediately and effectively taps into the collective panic that gripped the world as the submersible vanished – a media blowup that blurred the lines between rescue mission and reality show.

The intro expertly builds suspense, even though we already know the ending: debris, implosion, death.

What the documentary does well is craft a compelling psychological portrait of Oceangate CEO Stockton Rush. Through jaw-dropping meeting recordings, legal filings, and deeply uncomfortable behind-the-scenes clips, we see a man who was part pioneer, part salesman, and part fantasist.

The remarkable volume of footage, marked by a rare, almost brazen transparency, shows Rush forging ahead even as warning signs piled up. The documentary doesn’t shy away from his arrogance, nor the charisma that allowed him to deflect scrutiny for far too long.

It engages with the question of accountability more than Implosion: The Titanic Sub Disaster, raising valid questions – like why veteran diver Paul-Henri Nargeolet, nicknamed Mr. Titanic, lent his credibility to such a risky venture – but it still avoids pressing anyone too hard for real answers.

On Titan’s first deep ocean test, Rush planned to take the submersible down to 4,200 metres – 400 metres below the depth of the Titanic wreck. Instead, riveting footage shows him growing visibly unsettled by intensifying popping and eerie creaking noises as he nears 3,939 metres – a haunting, visceral sound even to a casual viewer.

“Close enough,” he mutters, before abandoning the test and returning to the surface. Despite the audible signs of strain, he triumphantly declares the mission a success: “I could’ve easily gone to four thousand metres, but for what?” he tells his crew.

Moments like this trace a decade-long pattern of overconfidence and gradual erosion of safety standards – the very safeguards meant to prevent Titan’s fate.

Another standout moment is the internal conversation where Rush brushes off safety concerns from David Lochridge – an ex-Royal Navy diver and OceanGate’s Chief Pilot and Director of Marine Operations – prior to a dive to the Andrea Doria shipwreck off the Massachusetts coast.

Rush announced he would be piloting the sub himself, but during the chaotic and near-deadly trip, Rush ventured far too close to the wreck, and the craft became surrounded by debris. He eventually and reluctantly handed over to Lochridge, who averted disaster. But their relationship was irreparably damaged and eventually led to Lochridge's dismissal.

Equally striking is the idea that “accessibility is ownership,” a line that links this modern disaster to Titanic itself and its enduring moral quandaries: who owns history, who gets to see it, and at what cost?

The film is a harsh critique of those who believe the rules don’t apply to them, but for all its strong storytelling and sharp editing, the film withholds the one thing most viewers came for: an actual recounting of what happened on the dive.

The implosion itself, when finally addressed, is rushed and largely speculative, and whether that’s due to ongoing investigations or a deliberate narrative choice, it leaves a void.

Without a clearer explanation – or even expert reconstructions – the film stops short of offering real insight into the tragedy’s final moments.

As with Implosion: The Titanic Sub Disaster, the film’s political, social, and global context could have given the story greater depth. Similarly, interviews with family members are framed against lavish mansion backdrops making it even harder to relate emotionally, even when they deliver powerful testimony.

Equally, the inclusion of YouTuber Jake Koehler, who recounts his near-miss onboard Titan with an emotional monologue, feels hollow and staged – a misjudged attempt to inject personal stakes before the story earns it.

The human loss is profound, but the presentation occasionally undercuts that intimacy.

It’s undeniably chilling – but with so many other documentaries already circulating, I couldn’t help but wonder if this one came too soon. Hopefully, once the investigation is complete, someone will return with a fuller account.

There’s no shortage of Titanic experiences out there, so credit where it’s due: Echoes from the Past puts in a real effort to find a genuinely new angle.

Told through the eyes of William Harbeck – a Canadian cinematographer and real-life passenger I’d never heard mentioned before – the VR exhibition is more reflective than flashy, and all the better for it.

The VR experience mostly consists of you gliding through moments and parts of the ship’s story that often get glossed over.

The decision to foreground lesser-known names, such as Fang Lang, one of Titanic’s six Chinese survivors (h/t ); Chief Engineer Joseph Bell, who died keeping the lights on; and Katie Gilnagh, a third-class teenager who escaped through sheer instinct and luck, lends the piece real emotional heft.

It feels more educational than sensational, which, in a sea of melodrama, is a refreshing quality.

Their stories are sensitively and thoughtfully told, underpinned by two years of research drawn from archives at the Cité de la Mer in Cherbourg and the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Here, the aim is to impart history in an immersive way – and at times, it really works.

Descending the Grand Staircase might be predictable, but peeking through a deck window into the ship’s gym was a moment of ingenuity. It made the experience feel explorable and alive, not just something to passively watch.

The way your headset doubles as a head torch while exploring the seabed is a clever touch too, allowing you to freely wander the debris field and marvel at just how far Titanic fell. The spatial audio and environmental detail are well-executed, and the aurora borealis makes an appearance.

Some moments are undeniably striking. Watching the iceberg silently scrape past the hull from just feet away is chilling in the right sense.

But the final sequence – a sweeping pullback to show Titanic in all her glory leaving Southampton – is clearly meant to be the showstopper. And emotionally, it lands. Visually? Not quite.

For all its ambition, Echoes from the Past is confined by the limits of its technology.

The graphics are dated, textures muddy, character movements uncanny and clunky. Lips don’t match the voices, hand gestures miss their marks, and characters often reach for objects without ever actually making contact – small details, but enough to break the illusion.

Minor, but persistent, VR gremlins – floating hands, jittery animations, clipping through walls – break the spell.

Dialogue can be difficult to catch, especially when it overlaps with ambient sound.

Sadly, the unreality of it all constantly reminds you you’re watching a simulation, not standing on the quay.

The promotional material – featuring dramatic images of visitors peering into the engine rooms or gazing at the gaping hole where the Grand Staircase once stood – sets expectations the experience never quite meets, advertising a level of realism and detail the VR simply doesn’t deliver. Maybe it hints at what future versions could achieve. Either way, we’re not there yet.

And at under 30 minutes, it ends just as it finds its rhythm.

Still, the ambition is undeniable, and there’s something quietly moving about it all.

Echoes from the Past spotlights forgotten voices through a fresh lens. The framing through Harbeck is thoughtful, sincere and refreshing, and there’s real heart in the storytelling – just don’t expect to forget you’re wearing a headset.

Pamela Gordon’s feature‑length investigation into OceanGate’s fatal 2023 dive is both a gripping procedural and a cool‑headed indictment, but its inability to tackle the moral argument left me frustrated.

Before laying out the case against OceanGate, the documentary hands the microphone to Josh Gates – the ever‑curious host of Discovery’s Expedition Unknown.

Gates boarded Titan for a 2021 test shoot and, as we see in newly released footage, watched the sub’s thrusters sputter and its carbon-fibre hull groan while Stockton Rush waved off each glitch.

His on‑camera admission that the vessel was “non‑functional” prompted him to scrap the episode and walk away – a decision that foreshadows everything that follows and instantly calibrates our sense of peril.

At every turn, the film boasts extraordinary evidence – black‑box audio from the support ship, screenshots of ignored safety emails, and, most impressively, uncensored footage from the U.S. Coast Guard’s marine board investigation – to demonstrate that hubris, ego and arrogance, not fate, doomed Titan.

Never‑before‑seen images of the sub’s final descent and Rush’s slick pitch decks reveal a glib “bait‑and‑switch” sales job that sidestepped regulatory oversight and buried mounting engineering warnings.

That unprecedented access powers the strongest stretches of the documentary: we see OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush pitching his “explorer mindset” while experts under oath unspool a litany of structural shortcuts, and we hear the bleak “muffled thud” of the sub’s final moments in real time.

It’s forensic without ever feeling exploitative, and the pacing never flags.

The film digs deep into the psychology of Rush, exploring what compels a wealthy, Princeton-educated entrepreneur to disregard red flag after red flag, to pilot a carbon-fibre cylinder two and a half miles to the bottom of the ocean in pursuit of social fame and acceptance.

Email chains and court‑hearing excerpts paint a portrait of a man so intoxicated by self-importance and marketing that he treated basic engineering cautions as personal insults.

The irony is laid bare and brutal: Titan meets the same fate as Titanic after ignoring the very safety codes born from that 1912 disaster – a parallel that seems lost on Rush’s tight‑knit, cheerleading crew.

One dissenting voice makes the cut: Antonella Wilby, a former contractor and remotely‑operated‑vehicle specialist who worked in operations and engineering. Wilby raised alarms about the hull’s integrity after hearing a loud crack during a 2022 test dive, only to be dismissed for lacking the requisite “explorer mindset.”

After raising alarms about vanishing safety protocols, she was effectively forced out. Still, her testimony is a jaw‑dropping highlight that exposes the company’s culture of optimism over oxygen.

But by zeroing in on Rush’s charisma, the film quietly absolves a long roster of enablers.

Engineers who downgraded safety standards to hit marketing deadlines, board members who signed off on wafer‑thin waivers, investors dazzled by "first‑mover" hype, and surface‑crew supervisors who heard the hull groan yet kept the descent going, all drift past in quick cuts or archive stills, never pressed on their own complicity.

Although Implosion was completed before the U.S. Coast Guard’s final report, Gordon could have widened the lens and traced a broader chain of accountability, rather than letting those quieter failures slip beneath the radar.

Instead, Gordon frames the emotional narrative largely through Christine Dawood, now widowed and the mother of the youngest victim. Her poise is affecting, but the attempt at an every‑viewer emotional hook never quite lands; the chasm between the Dawoods’ nine‑figure balance sheet and most people’s reality is simply too wide to bridge.

When a leisure trip costs a quarter of a million dollars per seat, sympathy competes with incredulity – and the film never directly addresses that tension.

That blinkered focus also leaves the tragedy floating in a narrative vacuum. Titan imploded the same week that a fishing trawler packed with hundreds of refugees capsized in the Mediterranean.

The world, ever obsessed with Titanic, fixated on the sub, with some outlets running 24/7 dedicated news channels while the refugee deaths barely scraped a headline.

While the omission feels deliberate – Gordon wants a self-contained thriller – the result is a curiously airlocked viewing experience, as if nothing else mattered above sea level.

Even so, the film’s painstaking reconstruction, steady moral outrage and crisp editing make it essential viewing for anyone still wondering how a seemingly avoidable catastrophe went ahead full steam.

And, just like every Titanic film where the ending is a foregone conclusion, knowing Titan’s fate ahead of time doesn’t cushion the blow. When the rescue‑mission finally comes across Titan’s shattered hull spewn across the Atlantic seabed, the chilling images land with one hell of a gut-punch.

If Implosion can’t quite square privilege with pathos, it still detonates each lesson with bursts of hubris, stupidity and arrogance so staggering that your jaw spends most of the time on the floor.

Titanic: Return to Cherbourg (original: Titanic: Retour à Cherbourg) at City of the Sea (original: Cité de la Mer) may not be a brand-new exhibition, but it remains a moving and imaginative way to experience Titanic’s story.

The experience opens with an introductory wraparound film – a good idea in theory, neatly highlighting Titanic’s Morse code signals and the major events of her maiden voyage. However, it misses a few key ones, including the ship’s final transmission, and the pacing can feel excruciatingly slow, with long stretches of nothing happening. Still, it’s a thoughtful way to set the scene, especially by emphasising the role of Nomadic, the White Star Line tender ship at Cherbourg, and using real quotes from passengers rather than dramatic visual scenes.

Throughout the exhibition is an atmospheric use of light and sound. As you walk through recreated decks and corridors, lights flicker, sounds rumble, and corridors go dark in line with Titanic’s sinking timeline. It's subtle but powerful – at one point whilst I was reading a panel in a third-class corridor, there was a groan, the light above me flickered, and then everything around me went momentarily dark, making for a genuinely jolting moment.

There are also fresh details, even for seasoned Titanic visitors, including displays not often seen elsewhere. The exhibition shines in its focus on emigrant stories, highlighting three individuals: Margaret Murphy from Ireland, Olaus Abelseth from Norway, and Elias Nicola Tarred from Lebanon.

It also clears up the much-talked-about "gate" controversy, explaining its deliberate connection to the film rather than leaving it as a random prop.

Information is presented in varied, creative ways: videos, text, voiceovers, half-opened doors, keyhole views – all helping to keep the experience engaging. Many of these techniques are ‘of their time’ and may well have been a cost-saving measure, but actually made for a genuinely unique immersion.

Passenger cabins, rooms, and parts of the ship are linked to real people rather than being left generic. One full-scale cabin recreation is in the style of Louis XVI and designated to first-class passenger Helene Baxter.

A particularly unique highlight is learning about the Titanic's mail clerks — a rarely discussed aspect, especially given that "RMS" in "RMS Titanic" stands for Royal Mail Ship. The recreation of the mail room adds important context and depth to the ship's operational story.

3D lenticular edits of familiar images showing interiors like the swimming pool and dining rooms add ‘background’ depth without needing full-scale reconstructions.

One particularly refreshing feature is the focus on lesser-known crew members, including Annie Robinson, a stewardess, offering a broader view than the usual Titanic names.

In the centre of the exhibition are a series of artefacts on loan from RMS Titanic Inc. These should have been the most compelling bit, but instead, they are clumped together with no explanation, no dramatic isolation, and no real gravity attached to them. Items recovered from two-and-a-half miles under the ocean surface after 85 years ought to have their own moment, and sadly, here, they don't get that. Given the contentious nature of artefact recovery, especially in relation to Titanic, their presentation deserved more attention.

That said, the items they do have are of note, including several pieces owned by First Officer William Murdoch.

I would have liked more focus specifically on Titanic’s and White Star Line’s connection to Cherbourg, given many notable passengers including the famous ‘Unsinkable Molly Brown’ boarded there.

In the main hall, there are replicas of Argo and other submersibles, which are a real treat for those interested in the discovery of Titanic. Argo was one of the submersibles involved in capturing the wreck, and there are additional displays featuring James Cameron and Deepsea Challenger for those fascinated by deep-sea exploration. These extra Titanic-related exhibits in the main hall nicely complement the main exhibition upstairs, offering visitors a broader view of the ship's story, from her tragic end to her discovery and exploration decades later.

Another worthwhile addition included with the museum ticket is the tour of Le Redoutable, a decommissioned French ballistic missile submarine and the largest submarine in the world open to the public. Wandering the narrow corridors and exploring inside the cabins was an impressive and fascinating visit on its own, offering a real sense of life at sea.

The most famous ship in history only ever dropped anchor three times, one of which was here, but Titanic is not the star of the show at this port. Cherbourg deserves more, and sadly, Titanic: Return to Cherbourg doesn’t quite hit the mark. Despite this, its aging and obvious limitations on size, the exhibition still delivers a thoughtful and meaningful experience. It is neither state-of-the-art nor exhaustive like Titanic Belfast, and is unlikely to be worth going out of your way for, but where it lacks in scale, it makes up for in charm, authenticity, and heart.

The miraculous survival of these six passengers did not mark the end of their hardships. Within 24 hours of arriving at Ellis Island's immigrant inspection station in New York, they were expelled under the Chinese Exclusion Act, a law that barred Chinese immigrants from entering the United States.

For over a century, the six men faded into obscurity – until now.

In The Six, director Arthur Jones, producer Luo Tong and executive producer James Cameron follow lead researcher and marine historian Steven Schwankert, who pieces together one of the last mysteries of Titanic’s fateful story.

It reveals a story shaped by racial discrimination and anti-immigration policies (a narrative that one might think resonates more powerfully today than perhaps it did over 110+ years ago) and shines a long-overdue light on the Chinese survivors of Titanic.

The film skillfully weaves together archival footage and contemporary interviews to reveal how these resilient men not only survived one of history’s most infamous disasters, but how their contributions were erased from mainstream accounts.

While the documentary’s pacing sometimes falters, with lengthy exposition that can feel a bit heavy-handed and is frustratingly low on content (more of criticism of the racial tensions it explores than the film itself), its narrative is both moving and enlightening.

One of the film’s greatest strengths is its dedication to filling in historical gaps, restoring dignity to those whose voices were muted for too long. In a cinematic landscape where Titanic narratives are often overdone and rehashed – offering little beyond the familiar generalisations – the documentary breaks new ground with genuinely original research and insights.

The respectful treatment of the survivors’ stories is underscored by thoughtful interviews that bring personal memories and emotions to the forefront, providing a window into a world often left unexplored in Titanic lore. The direction and editing, though occasionally uneven, works hard to maintain an immersive atmosphere, ensuring that viewers remain invested in this untold chapter of history.

Its unsettling message reminds us that we are losing pieces of history almost daily –perhaps more so now than at any other time – and too much has been whitewashed. The Six is a vital corrective to that.

It is a significant and compelling contribution to the historical documentary genre, a must-see for history buffs, Titanic fans, and those interested in alternative perspectives on well-known tragedies. Its ambition, genuine insight, and commentary on social issues is a rare, sorely needed addition to Titanic’s story.

Instead, as we now know, the doomed, delayed, and over-budget disaster defied every expectation to break all box office records, ultimately emerging as the world’s most beloved and acclaimed cinematic triumph.

Now, 30 years later, diaries written by those on set are read aloud for the first time ever. These personal accounts document the trials and tribulations of those who worked together to deliver Hollywood’s last true epic – Titanic.

Actress-turned-filmmaker Alexandra Boyd, cast by Cameron as “First Class Woman,” masterfully weaves together personal anecdotes, production challenges, and the unwavering dedication of the cast and crew. Every scene resonates with respect for the historical tragedy that inspired the film and with reverence for the artistry and talent that brought this monumental project to life.

This isn’t an analytical exploration – Titanic has weathered plenty of that – but rather an unashamed love letter to a film the world can’t let go of.

There’s undeniable joy in hearing actors recount their casting tales and personal encounters. On a sun-drenched bay in Mexico, they found their rhythm amid a sprawling, meticulously recreated Titanic ship set – a feat of design and elegance that left everyone in awe of its ambition.

These candid reflections reveal how being part of this cinematic phenomenon transformed the lives of those who brought it to life, highlighting the meticulous craftsmanship behind every scene and capturing the bittersweet spirit of Titanic – a symbol of human ambition and vulnerability.

Without major stars or fresh behind-the-scenes footage, the magic here lies in intimate moments. Diary readings and candid discussions transport the actors back to their younger selves, shedding new light on the relentless moviemaking process that birthed this timeless epic.

In one of the film’s most moving sequences, actors reading their diaries back for the first time are overcome with emotion. With tears in their eyes, they recall their first stunts and vividly imagine the horror of that fateful night.

These heartfelt moments – where raw emotion meets the weight of unforgettable memories – transcend Titanic fandom. The sincerity in their voices and the palpable nostalgia in each recollection create a powerful tribute to Cameron’s vision, their diaries and its enduring material.

Boyd recalls how the cast and crew made her feel unexpectedly significant on set. We hear from Kris – a dancer who doubled for Leonardo DiCaprio during a press tour – and from Amy, who was so overwhelmed she nearly lost her composure while trading lines with Kate Winslet.

These actors worked tirelessly while critics predicted the project’s demise. Instead, they enjoyed a once-in-a-lifetime, front-row seat to history.

The original score envelops each scene with emotion and grandeur, perfectly echoing the sweeping majesty of James Horner’s score, Titanic’s narrative and Cameron’s masterpiece.

Without access to archival footage, Boyd instead complements the narrative with Dale McCarthy’s breathtaking drawings, which capture the film’s vivid reality. His illustrations translate the epic’s grand scale into striking visuals and intricate details on a fraction of the budget.

Where the documentary falters is when it leans on fan testimony about what the 1997 film means to them. As a mega-fan, I can see what Boyd was aiming for: capturing that sense of connection, perhaps even thanking the fans who propelled the film into the juggernaut it became, why it still endures, and why no one can quite explain how it remains a cultural phenomenon no other film has really come close to matching.

In theory, those voices should add warmth and texture; in practice, they too often drift into long detours, weighed down by overly personal minutiae that sit miles from the story on screen. A couple of contributors even feel oddly disconnected from the film – their appearances reading less like insight and more like self-indulgent filler, the kind of padding you notice precisely because it adds so little.

That said, at this stage in the timeline, there is little new to be said about the 1997 phenomenon. Yet, through her documentary, Boyd manages to offer a fresh, heartfelt, intimate look at the remarkable story that culminated in a true cinematic epic, along with its creative process and enduring legacy.

Even the most casual cinemagoer will find themselves reconnecting with the timeless magic of Titanic. After all, it is this spellbinding allure – captured in so many iconic scenes, so many recognisable faces, and their heart-wrenching moments – that has gripped the world like nothing else before or since.

Its detours notwithstanding, Ship of Dreams: Titanic Movie Diaries is not just an extraordinary testament to Boyd’s foresight and dedication; it is proof – if ever more was needed – that three decades on from its release, there is no film quite like Titanic.

Unsurprisingly, one of the more intriguing aspects of this exhibition is its focus on Spanish passengers, a group often overlooked in Titanic narratives. While the details are light, their inclusion adds a fresh perspective and a welcome shift from the usual first class Anglo-American lens through which the story is told.

That being said, this is not an artefact-driven experience, nor does it try to be. Rather than displaying relics from the wreck or recreating the grandeur of Titanic’s interiors, The Legend of Titanic prioritises immersion, with mixed results.

The VR headset experience, for example, is a disappointment. Compared to the high-quality virtual experience in Atlanta, this one already feels outdated – more akin to an early 2000s PC game than a cutting-edge visual journey. The graphics are clunky, the movement unnatural, and it lacks the emotional weight that VR, at its best, can bring to Titanic’s story.

However, the centrepiece of the exhibition – the main immersive room – is an extraordinary and spine-tingling experience. It doesn’t aim for historical precision but instead throws you headfirst into Titanic’s world, capturing the sheer awe of her construction, the thrill of her maiden voyage, and, in an instant, the terror of her final hours. It’s a visceral, full-throttle and all-encompassing spectacle that, even if just for 12 minutes, truly plunges you into another world.

One of the most striking elements of The Legend of Titanic is its original soundtrack and score. Unlike many immersive exhibits that rely on stock music or generic sound design, or ripping off James Horner’s epic score to the 1997 film, this production invests in a bespoke, evocative composition that heightens the experience. The score swells at just the right moments – stirring during the ship’s triumphant launch, chillingly tense as disaster looms. It’s rare to see this level of investment in the musical craftsmanship for an exhibition, and it undoubtedly adds a powerful, cinematic layer to the storytelling.

As was the case with Exhibition Hub’s immersive attempt, with some refinement, The Legend of Titanic has the potential to be something remarkable, perhaps even a contender alongside Titanic Belfast as one of the landmark Titanic experiences. They have undoubtedly set the bar for an immersive Titanic experience, but its filler content brings it right back down to earth. That said, for the price point of €13/£10/$13, it’s really quite hard to complain too much.

Titanic: An Immersive Voyage is an ambitious attempt to bring Titanic’s story to life, combining immersive environments with interactive exhibits. It delivers moments of genuine ingenuity and emotional depth, but its uneven execution left me frustrated.

Unsinkable host and good friend LA Beadles and I travelled nearly four hours to check out what promised to be a “never-before-seen, immersive experience” that blends artefacts, room recreations, virtual reality, 3D imagery, and video animations to tell Titanic’s story “like never before.”

We were, to be honest, pretty sceptical that a Titanic experience planted on the edges of Atlanta was going to offer us much value. Our scepticism felt quickly justified when the first gallery kicked things off with some pretty egregious misrepresentation of artefacts.

I immediately noticed a J. Peterman replica of Jack Dawson’s shirt being presented as the actual garment worn by Leonardo DiCaprio in James Cameron’s 1997 mega-hit, Titanic. The J. Peterman Company was authorised to produce and sell exact replicas of the film’s costumes, which remain sought after today. However, these replicas are not the original items used in the film. The shirt on display even had the J. Peterman tag visibly attached, clearly indicating its status as a reproduction rather than an authentic prop.

The same was true for the shoes claimed to have been worn by Kate Winslet during the iconic “flying” scene.

Sadly, this was a recurring issue, extending far beyond the film props. Many – if not most – items were either from Titanic’s sister ship, Olympic, or completely unrelated, yet presented with misleading labels or contexts that deliberately blurred the truth. Worse still, some artefacts were blatantly fake, further undermining the exhibition’s credibility. This persistent misrepresentation eroded trust from the outset, making it difficult to fully appreciate the genuinely original and thoughtful displays.

Meanwhile, items purported to be genuine artefacts, such as a lifebuoy from Nomadic, Titanic’s tender ship at Cherbourg, were casually hung on a hook without any protective casing. This lack of safeguarding suggests one of two troubling possibilities: either the items are fakes and treated with indifference, or they are real and demonstrate a shocking disregard for the preservation of historical artefacts. Not great either way

Scattered throughout the exhibition were several doors that left us confused. Their vague context implied a connection to Titanic, yet they clearly couldn’t be from the ship itself. Were they from Olympic? If so, there was no accompanying information to confirm this, nor any proper safeguarding to protect them from visitors’ sticky fingers. Perhaps they were simply period doors added for effect? If that’s the case, why were they intermittently protected?

Later, we were told that these doors were from Olympic, though I remain dubious. I have no evidence to counter this claim, but the lack of clear labelling and inconsistent preservation raises serious doubts about their authenticity.

As we moved on, the exhibition continued to falter in its attention to detail. The iconic grand staircase is reduced to a shallow backdrop with a couple of steps, an underwhelming representation of such a highly advertised feature.

One display detailed Titanic’s arrival in Cherbourg, France, but was paired with a photograph of Queenstown (now Cobh, Cork, Ireland), a glaring geographical error.

Several interactive exhibits were non-functional during the visit, and small but distracting oversights, such as IKEA pillows clearly visible in displays, broke the illusion of immersion and underscored a carelessness and lack of consistency prevalent throughout. We found ourselves frequently raising eyebrows at clumsily worded information panels, misleading artefacts or displays that were nearly there but missed the mark.

Things took a turn for the better as the immersive spaces came into their own. The main gallery, complete with a semi-submerged lifeboat, floating cargo and a 360° display of Titanic’s final hours, was a moving, well-thought-out and impressive experience.

Preceded by tilted galleries, the latter part of the ‘journey’ offers a genuinely innovative and disorienting experience, particularly the Marconi room and corridors. The angled design evokes an immediate sense of confusion and unease, making it one of the exhibition’s standout features. Similarly, the recreation of the boarding area is visually striking, using mirrors to create the illusion of a never-ending one-to-one scale of the once-great ship. It’s an impressive nod to the Titanic’s grandeur.

Even for us, the exhibition introduced new and lesser-known stories, including a woman who slept in a bed from Olympic for over 60 years. These fresh perspectives added depth and were complemented by striking displays.

Another standout moment was a newspaper corridor leading to a deckchair recovered from the wreckage. Walking through, it was hard not to be moved as you saw how news of the disaster unfolded around the world, culminating in a powerful encounter with the artefact itself. It was a thoughtful and poignant progression that created a genuinely emotional experience.

Another excellent feature of the exhibition was the iceberg room, a totally unique and, as far as I’m aware, unseen experience. It effectively explained the formation of Titanic’s iceberg in an engaging and educational way. Similarly, the recreations of the dining rooms were impressive, with items displayed in context to evoke the opulence of Titanic’s era. These moments showed a thoughtful approach to storytelling and added depth to the experience.

However, the VR experience was by far the highlight of the exhibition. This extraordinary feature allows visitors to interact with digital artefacts and explore the Titanic both as a wreck and in all her 1912 splendour.

You could enter the VR experience with the people you were visiting with, which provided endless amusement for LA and me. But once we found ourselves on the deck of Titanic the night of her sinking, surrounded by digital recreations of real passengers and their artefacts, the event's gravity was undeniable.

Ghostly voices recounted real passenger moments and quotes as you reached out to touch their possessions. One particularly moving moment featured Ida Straus’s famous words to her husband: “Where you go, I go. As we have lived, so will we die, together.” The 10-minute Virtual Reality experience brought both Titanic’s triumphant moments and her chilling and emotional ones to life.

It’s rare for me to encounter anything this deeply resonant in Titanic-themed exhibitions, and unlike Imagine Exhibition’s beyond-disappointing VR, this made the experience more than worth the visit.

Titanic: An Immersive Voyage hints at the potential for a truly groundbreaking experience. Despite its flaws, there is real heart and valiant efforts to make this exhibition stand out. The VR component and selected immersive elements prove the creators have the capability to deliver something not just profound and original but genuinely landmark in the Titanic narrative – perhaps even to match Titanic Belfast. Sadly, the misleading supporting pieces, reliance on superficial filler and blatant shortcuts cause the exhibition as a whole to fall short of its intended ambition.

Awarded Europe’s leading visitor attraction multiple times – surpassing the Eiffel Tower and the Colosseum – Titanic Belfast offers a compelling journey through history and an insight into how one vessel has gripped the world for over a century like nothing else before or since.

From the moment you approach Titanic Belfast, you are transported to an era of groundbreaking engineering and ambitious human endeavour through the architectural marvel of the building itself.

Designed to mimic the ship’s hulls, the structure, adorned with 3,000 individual shimmering aluminium shards, stands proudly against Belfast’s skyline, anchored by the very slipways she was built on, the very building she was designed in and the iconic yellow Harland and Wolff cranes – a testament to the city’s industrial prowess.

Surrounded by wooden benches that communicate Titanic’s last distress call, its breathtaking central glass atrium, rusted interior and four prow-shaped corners that point towards the cardinal directions, this is a building designed with Titanic at its very core.

Inside, Titanic Belfast focuses on delivering an immersive narrative experience, drawing visitors into the stories and emotions of the Titanic’s history rather than showcasing a vast collection of artefacts. And the experience is nothing short of riveting.

Across six floors, interactive exhibits not only recount the construction of Titanic but celebrate Belfast’s spirit through its industrial evolution. The sound-filled air with echoes of rivets being hammered recreates the bustling atmosphere of her early 1900s shipyard. Visitors ascend the gantry for an awe-inspiring view that underscores the sheer scale of Titanic before riding an indoor cable car through her construction. For families, the adventure is both educational and engaging.

Amidst the many captivating displays within Titanic Belfast, the recently added ‘Ship of Dreams’ gallery stands out as a profoundly moving tribute to the individuals whose lives were intertwined with the great ship. This immersive gallery is a full sensory journey into the aspirations and human stories – from the workers who pieced her together to the crew and passengers who embarked on her maiden voyage in search of a new beginning.

The emotional impact of this exhibit is immediate and overwhelming. As you turn a corner, the full 360-degree audio-visual experience envelops you, with floor-to-ceiling projections that bring to life the dreams and stories of these individuals. The centrepiece is a dynamically lit scale model of the Titanic, which rotates and transforms in sync with the narratives being projected, accompanied by a bespoke musical score that intensifies the emotive atmosphere of the gallery.

Descending the staircase within this space, visitors encounter a display of poignant artefacts that have borne witness to history. Among these is perhaps one of the most sought-after pieces: Wallace Hartley’s violin, a symbol of tragic heroism and huge significance in the Titanic community.

Other pieces include first-class stewardess Mabel Bennett’s sheepskin coat and Ella White’s black-enamelled cane, a testament to the era’s ingenuity and class. These items not only deepen the historical understanding of Titanic’s story but also forge a visceral connection to the personal experiences of those aboard. This whole gallery is an evocative journey that resonates deeply, leaving visitors with a lasting impression of awe and a profound sense of connection to the legacies of those who dreamed aboard Titanic.

Before you leave the room, you can’t miss the striking glass floor, beneath which lies a fish-eye view of Titanic’s wreck. Over 100,000 images have been painstakingly woven together to present a staggeringly detailed projection of the ship, set directly under your feet. Visitors are invited to step directly over the submerged remains, offering an intimate and powerful perspective – an experience not found anywhere else in the world. As you walk across, you are transported to the depths of the Atlantic, visually exploring the contours and debris of the historic wreck.

A mere stone’s throw from the exhibition is SS Nomadic, the tender ship that ferried passengers to Titanic. Beautifully renovated and preserved, it offers a tangible connection to the people who embarked on the ill-fated voyage. Here, original features like the ornate plasterwork, woodwork and staircase offer a glimpse into the luxury that Titanic passengers enjoyed, momentarily bridging the gap between past and present.

Once you emerge from the extraordinary experience, dining at Bistro 401 or The Galley Cafe presents a menu as impressive as the exhibit itself. Dishes like Belfast chowder, chilli-spiced salmon, Titanic-newspaper-wrapped fish and chips, aubergine lentil dahl, and an array of fresh salads reflect both local flavours and a modern twist on a bygone era. The quality surpasses typical attraction fare, making it a culinary stop in its own right.

In terms of value, Titanic Belfast is exemplary. An entire day can be spent exploring Nomadic and the main exhibition without even touching upon the additional attractions like the historic dry dock nearby. The fair pricing for tickets ensures accessibility for families and individuals alike.

But Titanic Belfast is more than just a Titanic exhibition; it’s a cultural homage to the city that built the most famous ship of all time. It stands not only as a memory of the tragic voyage but as a celebration of human ambition and creativity. With accolades justifiably placing it above most global and European landmarks, Titanic Belfast is a must-visit – a certified, true five-star journey through history, innovation, and resilience. It is, in my opinion, the very best Titanic experience available anywhere in the world; a landmark offering that leads the way in reimagining how history and public spaces can be accessible for all interests and ages.

Titanic Belfast stands as a paragon of innovative, immersive storytelling, rivalling the likes of Disneyland, Tate Modern, and The Guggenheim. Every step inside, outside and around is beyond awe-inspiring. This is not a ‘museum’ in any sense of the word.
